Butternut Tree Series
DAVE HILLER

Early in May I started roughing out a number of pieces from a butternut log. A customer requested a log that her dad had planted 50 years ago be turned into some keepsakes. The rough outs were dried in paper bags for about 3 months and had lost almost half of their moisture with very little cracking. The first two natural edge bowls were shown in July. The remaining eleven bowls ranging from 6 - 13 inches in diameter were re-turned over the last month. Four additional pieces were turned from wetter butternut, two vases, a hollow form and a candle holder. All pieces were finished with Watco and buffed. Butternut has always been one of my favorite woods to work with.
